Liverpool transfer news: Reds prepare double swoop as moves for Alberto Moreno and Javier Manquillo will take spending past £100m
Moreno will join for around £20m while Marquillo is set for a season-long loan with a view to a permanent deal

Liverpool are closing in on the signing of two Spanish defenders as Brendan Rodgers prepares to smash the £100m barrier with the latest additions to his summer spending spree set to be unveiled as Liverpool players in the next few days.
After seeing a move for Seville left-back Alberto Moreno fall through earlier in the summer, reports claim that the Reds have resurrected the transfer after making an offer of £20m for the 22-year-old. Moreno will add significant competition for the left-back position, which will also allow young English defender John Flanagan return to his favoured right-flank.
And Moreno could quickly be followed by Atletico Madrid right-back Javier Manquillo, who appears to be close to a season-long loan at Anfield. The highly-rated 20-year-old had been linked with Premier League side Arsenal earlier this year, but Liverpool will secure the deal that will include a £6m permanent signing clause in the coming days.
The move for the pair will take Liverpool’s spending this transfer window past the £100m mark, although the figure is funded by the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona for £75m.
Rodgers moved early to secure Southampton pair Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, and their former Saints team-mate Dejan Lovren quickly followed them to Merseyside in a cumulative £49m raid on the south coast club.
The Reds also completed moves for Lazar Markovic from Benfica, Emra Can from Bayer Leverkusen and Divock Origi from Lilli – where he will spend this season on loan – for a total of £40m, and the addition of Moreno will take their total expenditure to nearly £110m. The fee is extraordinarily close to the same figure Tottenham spent last season on seven players, but Rodgers insisted earlier this week “we are a different club and it’s a different vision that we have here”.
Speaking after their penalty shootout victory over Manchester City in New York as part of the International Champions Cup, Rodgers added: “We still have some business to do. We have some positions that we want to fill so by the end of August we’ll have a strong squad to go forward with.”
England midfielder Jordan Henderson was also full of praise for the new additions to the squad, saying: “The new signings are very good, and I hope they can kick on and strengthen us.”
