Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Liverpool have agreed personal terms over the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk playmaker Alex Teixeira, according to reports.
However, the news comes from FutbolUkraine, a Twitter account that cites a "member of Shakhtar's staff" as the source for their news.
The Liverpool Echo report that while although the two clubs have been locked in negotiation, with chief executive Ian Ayre flying to their Florida winter training camp last week, their valuation differs enormously.
Liverpool made an inital bid of £24.5million for the 26-year-old, but the Ukrainian club are believed to value the Brazilian, who has yet to play at senior international level, at closer to £38m.
Speaking to Brazilian newspaper Globo last week, Teixeira spoek about his desire to leave Shakhtar: “I would like to move in this transfer window and have told them [Shakhtar] that. They have received a very good offer and they are working on a solution. But if I don’t go now then I will leave in the summer.
“After six years in Europe and with Shakhtar we are ready to move and I have spoken to my wife and daughter. It is my desire to move to a big league and I know that the English league is very strong.
“I am ready and I know that I will grow up a lot there. I am aware that two big clubs such as Liverpool and Chelsea are interested but I haven’t given my word to either of them.
“I am not ruling out other leagues but I do want to play in the Premier League. In my mind, it is the strongest in the world. I want a challenge and to further my career there.
“My aim is to move to a big club so that I can well there and get a place in the Brazil squad. Everyone knows that it is hard to achieve and I need to leave here to achieve that goal.”
