But it won't just be about cost cuts and manager Rafael Benitez will want to replace the dead wood in the squad with new talent. With the summer's big signing Alberto Aquilani hardly on the field yet, it is unlikely that he'll get huge money to spend, but some fresh blood is needed.
Benitez isn't going to sign all of these and he may pick up just one or two in the January window, but these are the names rumoured to be on his short(ish) list.
