Daniel Sturridge appears set to choose West Bromwich Albion over Newcastle United as he prepares to leave Liverpool on loan in search of more first-team football.

The 28-year-old’s playing time has been limited under Jürgen Klopp recently and faces an uphill struggle to win a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for next summer’s World Cup.

Sturridge has attracted plenty of potential suitors during this month’s transfer window, with Internazionale and Sevilla both expressing an interest in signing the striker.

It is understood that Rafael Benitez, the Newcastle manager, also looked into the possibility of signing Sturridge on a temporary basis after negotiations with Feyenoord over striker Nicolai Jorgensen hit an impasse.

Sturridge, however, is now likely to join up with Alan Pardew at relegation-threatened West Bromwich, who knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup at Anfield on Saturday.

The former Manchester City and Chelsea striker was born in Birmingham and retains close family ties in the area.

Pardew has made no secret of his desire to sign a new striker before Wednesday’s transfer deadline, though remained coy when Sturridge’s name was mentioned on Saturday.

“I think he is a great player but I don't know what his situation is at the moment,” he said.

Sturridge has made 14 appearances for Liverpool this season, scoring three goals, having largely been forced to provide cover for first-choice striker Roberto Firmino.
