Transfer window club-by-club guide: A look at what every Premier League team needs in the 10 days before the deadline

There isn't long left for the top flight clubs to make those final few transfers before the window shuts, here's what they need

There are only 10 days left until the transfer window closes in an orgy of giant pound signs on giant TV screens, yellow ties and videos of men driving in and out of in car parks.

And while spending has passed £1bn for the third summer in a row, there are still plenty of Premier League sides looking to make those sweet, over-inflated transfers before the window shuts for another four months.

Indeed, more than half of the current top flight sides have broken their transfer record this summer but there are still plenty of gaps to be filled in nearly every squad. Here are some suggestions on what each club needs and you can argue about it and tell me I'm wrong in the comments below.

Arsenal

What's needed: A central midfielder

I'm sure Aaron Ramsey, Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny are lovely gentlemen but Patrick Vieira and Emmanuel Petit they are not. Arsene Wenger has shelled out £47m on a new striker and has 400 attacking midfielders at his disposal but needs someone who can keep things ticking over behind them.

Step forward Jean Michael Seri, who has been dubbed the African Xavi...by Xavi. His French club Nice want £34m for him and Barcelona are reportedly as convinced as Xavi is and are sniffing around but he would be perfect for the Gunners.

However, Wenger's insistence that Arsenal "have too many players" and he won't buy before he sells do almost makes those last two sentences redundant.

Bournemouth

What's needed: A winger

In the summer Bournemouth signed one of the Premier League's most natural goalscorers in Jermain Defoe, even at the grand old age of 34.

But two games in they haven't scored a single goal with Defoe, Josh King and Benik Afobe finding chances at a premium.

Eddie Howe needs a creative winger to create opportunities for his strikers and they have been linked with Demarai Gray from Leicester, who would do the job, but is going to cost the plucky little, Russian money-backed Cherries around £20m.

Brighton

What's needed: A striker

The Premier League new boys have somehow managed to spend £40m on 10 new players and still left themselves with Sam Baldock, Glenn Murray and Tomer Hemed as their first choice strikers. And Izzy Brown who has arrived on loan from Chelsea.

Bless them, but that quartet are not going to score you the goals needed to stay up.

The Seagulls need a proper striker and have been linked with former Manchester City flop Stevan Jovetic, now at Inter. That's more like it.

Burnley

What's needed: A centre-back and a striker

Michael Keane and Andre Gray are going to be big misses and haven't really been replace properly, unless you count Jon Walters and Phil Bardsley as proper replacements, which no-one does.

Leeds striker Chris Wood, who scored 30 goals last season, has just joined the Clarets for £15m and could be the next lower league man to make the step up, a la Gray.

There is a ready-made centre-back replacement for Keane in Jozo Simunovic at Celtic but the Croatian will set Sean Dyche back a fair chunk of that £25m Everton paid for Keane.

Chelsea

What's needed: A striker and maybe a wing-back

Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso are probably the best wing-backs in the Premier League but if they lose either of those, who fills in? Azpilicueta? Kenedy? You? Me?

Someone like Antonio Candreva, who Inter are reportedly ready to let leave to the Blues for £25m, would be a great option.

Up front, once Diego Costa inevitably goes, it leaves just Michy Batshuayi and Loic Remy as backup to Alvaro Morata. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wants to leave Dortmund. Just saying...

Crystal Palace

What's needed: A striker, a goalkeeper and a centre-back

Ideally, all of them will have played in a 3-4-3 before too because that's what Frank de Boer is going to play this season and no-one is going to convince him otherwise.

Mama Sakho is the one Palace fans want but the club have long insisted Liverpool's £30m valuation is too high and that they can sign three players for that sort of money.

West Ham's Adrian isn't the most exciting signing but would be an upgrade on Wayne Hennessey in goal while De Boer needs someone, anyone, as a backup for Christian Benteke. Lucas Perez wants to leave Arsenal doesn't he?

Dougie Freedman's sudden return as Sporting Director has strengthened those Oliver Burke rumours; the Leipzig winger recently referred to the former Forest boss as a "father figure".

Everton

What's needed: To stop spending

We are one more £30m Premier League midfielder away from staging an intervention at Goodison Park.

I make it £140m so far, nine new players and apparently Ronald Koeman wants more. Has he not heard of moderation?

Failing that, he could just go all out and try to get Diego Costa from Chelsea. For a laugh if anything.

Huddersfield

What's needed: A full-back

It's actually quite hard trying to work out what the Terriers need as they've spent pretty well and seem to have managed to acquire the exact sort of players that are needed for David Wagner's high-paced, 200mph game.

But a new full-back or two would do the trick. That's the area they appear to have the least quality in.

Wagner has admitted he is keen on Barnsley star Andy Yiadom. It's not a transfer that would get people talking but it has 'Huddersfield' written all over it.

Leicester

What's needed: Hopefully no-one but probably an attacking midfielder very soon

The Foxes have spent very well so far this summer but it's the outgoings that are more of a concern for their fans. Specifically one man. And that man is Riyad Mahrez of course.

He's still somehow at Leicester however is highly likely to leave in the next 10 days, but who should Craig Shakespeare get to replace him?

Look, I'm not saying it should be Andros Townsend or that it will be Andros Townsend, or that anyone every really needs Andros Townsend.

But Andros Townsend.

Liverpool

What's needed: Virgil van Dijk

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk's inevitable move from Saint Mary's to Anfield will go down as the most predictable transfer of the summer.

But he will also be just what Jurgen Klopp needs. That and a good shave.

Manchester City

What's needed: Some more defenders, why not?

For a team that has spent £120m on defenders already this summer, Manchester City still somehow seemingly need to sign defenders in the final 10 days of the transfer window.

West Brom captain Jonny Evans is the latest name linked and he might be the most sensible suggestion for City in years.

Then obviously there are suggestions Pep Guardiola wants to meet Lionel Messi's €300m [£275m] release clause but it wouldn't be a City summer transfer window without Messi linked to the Etihad would it?

Manchester United

What's needed: Probably not much

Not that we're getting carried away, but after back-to-back 4-0 wins in the opening two games you could suggest Jose Mourinho doesn't need anything having spent very well on Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku this summer.

Inter's Croatian playmaker Ivan Perisic has long been linked with a move and there are also suggestions Mourinho will tempt Alexis Sanchez to Old Trafford, but at this point it feels like he would only be making those signings because he can.

Newcastle

What's needed: So many transfers

It's been a disastrous start to the season for Newcastle and not exactly a golden age of transfer windows either. Already new signing Mikel Merino has angered Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness while two defeats from the opening two games has left Rafa Benitez desperate to bring in more.

Benitez wants Pepe Reina in goal (of course he does) and has been linked with Sampdoria attacking midfielder Dennis Praet, and sure, he sounds exactly like a Newcastle sort of player, so why not?

Southampton

What's needed: Someone who won't sign for Liverpool in a year

Southampton have already pre-empted Van Dijk's imminent departure to Liverpool with the signing of Jan Bednarek while £15m arrival Mario Lemina will either be at Anfield in a year or back in Italy.

The Saints' strength is down their wings and in Nathan Redmond, Dusan Tadic and James Ward-Prowse they have three of the most reliable, but another wouldn't hurt.

Step forward Dougie Freedman's best mate Oliver Burke, who seems destined to return to England this summer. Palace want him but there's something of the Southamptons about him.

Stoke

What's needed: Another striker

Jese from Real Madrid looks like he will be a superb signing for the Potters but he's only on loan and aside from him they are left with Peter Crouch, Mame Biram Diouf and Saido Berahino.

They question, though, is who can they get? Chris Wood has just left Leeds for Burnley,so what about Spurs flop Vincent Janssen? I'm serious!

Swansea

What's needed: A goalscorer

Swansea's summer transfers so far have ranged from Manchester United and Chelsea youngsters to Irish Premier League stars and still it feels like they need loads more.

Especially up front. They need a goalscorer and as nice as his hair and initiation signing is, Tammy Abraham isn't him.

The Swans want Wilfried Bony back and let's face it, that would be a perfect transfer for everyone involved. Nacer Chadli would be a great replacement for Gylfi Sigurdsson too.

Tottenham

What's needed: A back-up striker and a full-back

Tottenham appear to be playing a strange transfer tactic this summer of waiting until late in the window when prices are jacked up and signing centre-backs for £42m that probably won't play.

What they need, though, is another full-back and PSG's Serge Aurier has got Spurs fans excited after liking a photo on Instagram showing Tottenham targets mocked up in Spurs shirts. Yes, this is the world of transfer rumours we now live in.

And when it comes to strikers they need more options than Harry Kane and Vinny Janssen. Bournemouth's Josh King seems ready to make the step up...

Watford

What's needed: A winger

Watford have bucked their transfer trend in recent years by signing players not from Udinese and this summer have signed a lot of unexciting but probably quite effective players in midfield and up front.

What's missing is a pacy winger and there is a Peruvian man called Andre Carillo who is desperate to leave Benfica and come to England.

He will win the fans over instantly if he brings Nobby Solano's trumpet with him.

West Brom

What's needed: Centre-backs

If Jonny Evans leaves for Manchester City, and let's face it he probably will, then West Brom need another centre-back. Even if he doesn't they could do with one or two more. Mainly because Tony Pulis absolutely loves centre-backs almost as much as he loves baseball caps.

If they have the money then Mama Sakho is available for £30m, with Palace refusing to pay that. If they don't want to spend so much, Tottenham's Kevin Wimmer is available for far less. Both seem like perfect Pulis signings.

West Ham

What's needed: A central midfielder

With the Hammers obsessed with signing attackers and Slaven Bilic refusing to sign any more defenders it leaves midfield as the only option left.

As much as everyone in East London loves Mark Noble, West Ham need upgrades in the middle of the park. Step forward William Carvalho, the Portuguese powerhouse who would be a brilliant addition.

His release clause is £40m but money basically seems to be no object these days for any Premier League sides.
