Ian Wright has seemingly begged Arsenal to sign Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema this summer, using plenty of 'praying' emojis in a tweet sent out last night.

The French striker has been heavily linked with a transfer to the Emirates this summer, with Arsene Wenger reportedly preparing a £40m bid.

Arsenal legend Wright scored 185 goals in 288 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners between 1991 and 1998. Only Thierry Henry (228) has scored more.

Benzema fuelled transfer speculation he was moving to the Gunners last week by posting a picture of himself on a private jet with the caption: "Leave the past to the past. #directionfuture", as well as following an account called 'Wengerland'.

It was false hope, however, as Benzema stayed with Real Madrid on their pre-season tour of Asia.

Gunners playmaker Santi Cazorla also spoke highly of the Frenchman yesterday, saying that he was a "great player who would get into any team".

"Benzema fits into any team," Cazorla said. "The good players fit well in every side. He has quality and would adapt great."

The Spanish midfielder did admit that he doubted the Gunners would sign Benzema, however.
