Josh King takes aim at Eddie Howe to throw Bournemouth future into doubt

Josh King has admitted he is unhappy with how his manager Eddie Howe has used him this season in a frank interview which leaves his future at Bournemouth in major doubt.

In 2016-17 King scored 16 goals in 36 matches in a standout campaign on the south coast, but this season he has played more often as an attacking midfielder than rather an out-and-out striker.

He still managed eight league goals but the 26-year-old has made plain his frustration with his new role and will consider his options this summer, with Newcastle United reported to be interested in the Norwegian international.

“I don’t like to make excuses but I have to say I was surprised when I returned in pre-season and was moved into a deeper position having done so well the year before,” King told Norwegian newspaper newspaper VG.

“I’m not happy and my manager knows that. I have talked to the boss and told him that I don’t like this role, but what is said between us stays in that room. It’s not secret that I don’t like it. I’m a striker and that’s where I’m at my best.”

King said that he would have to consider his next step carefully, and while he wanted to do what is best for the team, he believes his record proves where he is most effective.

“People might say I’m selfish complaining when I play regularly but the numbers speak for themselves: I’m best as a striker. If you look at me as a player, I think nobody would say that I’m a No10.

“I have three years left on my contract at Bournemouth, but in football you never know. I just want to play in my best position. Why change something that worked so well, I don’t know, and maybe it’s been playing on my mind all season.”
