Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has hinted that Javier Hernandez will stay at the club during this transfer window.
West Ham have been linked with a £12million move for the Mexican striker, who spent last season on loan at Real Madrid, but the United are short of options up front and Van Gaal sees Hernandez as his first reserve.
"No, the (first) striker is [Wayne] Rooney, Hernandez is the second striker and he knows that," Van Gaal said when asked if he will leave.
Van Gaal's main focus is on bringing in new players before the window shuts.
The Dutchman is keen to push through a deal for Pedro, who scored the winner for Barcelona in their Uefa Super Cup win over Sevilla in Georgia on Tuesday night.
There could be at least one more signing before September 1, but Van Gaal will not enter the market just for the sake of it.
"It is always our aim to improve our squad and when it is possible we shall do it," he said.
"But we will only buy when it is a contribution to the selection."
