Manchester United's transfer plans have been dealt a setback with Bayern Munich sealing a two-year loan for transfer target James Rodriguez.

Both James and Real have been desperate to do a deal this summer due to the Colombian star falling out of favour to such an extent that he was left out of their Champions League final squad, and the 25-year-old has been offered around Europe.

All of Bayern, United, Chelsea and Internazionale have been in talks about a potential signing at some stage, but none were willing to go close to the £70m asking price Bernabeu president Florentino Perez is looking for.

With James eager to get a deal done before the Spanish club leave for their pre-season tour, however, Real instead began contemplating the possibility of a long-term loan with Bayern swooping in to seal the deal.

Bayern manager Carlo Ancelotti also worked with James in what was probably his most productive season at the Bernabeu, his debut campaign in 2014-15, before the Italian was somewhat surprisingly sacked.

He is known to be open to the idea of working with the Colombian star again, as the playmaker seeks to revitalise his career.
