Hull City were the busiest Premier League club on transfer deadline day, announcing a raft of new recruits.

Manager Steve Bruce completed the club record signing of Uruguay striker Abel Hernandez for £10m and midfielder Mohamed Diamé for around £3.5m as he attempts to mould a squad capable of avoiding a season at the wrong end of the Premier League table.

Bruce continued his overhaul of the Tigers squad late last night, adding a second Uruguay international in the form of Southampton’s Gaston Ramirez on loan until the end of the campaign. The club were also thought to have been granted an extension beyond the 11pm deadline to try to sign Hatem Ben Arfa from Newcastle.

Hernandez has been in East Yorkshire for several days and, having been granted a work permit on Friday, finally sealed his move from the Italian side Palermo. He was later joined by Diamé from West Ham United. Both players have agreed three-year deals with the Tigers, with Hernandez having the option of extending for a fourth.

Hernandez, 24, will fill the gap left by Republic of Ireland’s Shane Long, who joined Southampton in a surprise £12m move last month. The Uruguayan has seven goals in 14 appearances for his country and was part of their World Cup squad this summer, having scored 14 goals last season as Palermo won Italy’s Serie B title.

Bruce said: “Abel is a fantastic signing and highlights just how far the club has come in such a short space of time. He is an exciting talent and like myself, I’m sure the supporters can’t wait to see him in action.”

Senegal midfielder Diamé, who knows the English game well having enjoyed three seasons at Wigan Athletic before joining the Hammers, is understood to have cost Hull around £3.5m. “I’m delighted to welcome Mohamed to the club,” added Bruce. “His experience, both at international level and in the Premier League, will be invaluable for us as we look to cement our place in the top flight.”

Bruce is keen to operate with a bigger squad this season but still sanctioned the sale of forward George Boyd to Burnley on a three-year deal. The move was finalised early yesterday, with defender Joe Dudgeon extending his loan at Barnsley until January.

Boyd, who has reportedly moved for £3m, said: “It has been a bit of a whirlwind – it has happened quickly over the last few days. But I’m delighted and can’t wait to get started.

“What convinced me to join [Burnley] was the offer of working hard, getting in the first team and continuing to play in the Premier League, which everyone wants to do.”

Boyd joined Hull from Peterborough on loan in February 2013. The move was made permanent at the end of that season and he then featured intermittently in the Premier League last term. As well as signing Boyd, Burnley took Chelsea’s England Under-21 midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah on loan until January.

Manchester City allowed Alvaro Negredo to join Valencia on loan until the end of the season.

Sunderland signed Ricardo Alvarez on a season-long loan. The Argentina midfielder moves to the Premier League from Internazionale, where he has scored 14 times in 90 appearances. The Black Cats also took the Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates on a season-long loan.

Netherlands midfielder Marco van Ginkel followed former clubmate Fernando Torres by leaving Chelsea to join Milan on loan.

Espanyol signed Spanish midfielder Jose Canas on a free transfer after Swansea cancelled his contract by mutual consent.
