The Daily Star claims that a senior source at United has revealed that the club are definitely interested in signing Kane this summer, although Spurs are defiant in that they will not allow their 2014/15 top goalscorer to leave the club after his breakthrough season at White Hart Lane.
The source told the Daily Star: "He is someone we are interested in signing, but nothing has happened so far."
United manager Louis van Gaal is eager to strengthen his attacking options after choosing not to activate a permanent transfer clause in Radamel Falcao’s loan contract that would have seen the Colombian stay at Old Trafford for a fee of £43.2m.
There are also doubts over the future of Robin van Persie, with the Netherlands striker entering the final year of his contract and being heavily linked with a move away from United. Van Persie, 31, endured an injury hit season that also saw him perform below his best for much of the campaign, which saw him net just 10 goals in 27 appearances.
However, despite United signalling their intention to launch a move for Kane – who himself bagged 31 goals for Spurs in all competitions last season – Daniel Levy insisted that the England striker will not be leaving even if United up their interest in the form of a £50m bid.
According to The Telegraph, Levy could hold out for as much as £70m, and also insisted that another United target Hugo Lloris will not be leaving the club this summer. David De Gea is expected to join Real Madrid sooner rather than later with the Spanish club eager to tie up a deal in time for the goalkeeper to be a part of their pre-season tour of Australia.
That move is set to trigger a goalkeeper merry-go-round, given that United have identified Lloris as one of the possible candidates to replace De Gea, along with Chelsea’s Petr Cech and Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak.
