Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Despite signing a five year contract only eight weeks ago, according to The Evening Standard, Cahill is worried for the future of his career with the Blues. The ex-Bolton defender has only started five games in the last two months, with John Terry and Kurt Zouma currently inhabiting the centre back spots.
With the European Championship set for this summer in France, Cahill is worried that the lack of game time may hamper his chances for an England place.
Having sold ex-Arsenal striker Gervinho for £11.5 million, AS Roma do have money to spend and could be tempted to make a move for the player. And whilst Cahill may be attracted to life in Italy; he should perhaps heed the warnings that were indicated by Ashley Cole’s career.
The former England international has only just left the Italian giants to join LA Galaxy. In a torrid spell in which the player never appeared to settle; he played only 11 games in two seasons. Cahill may hope for the same kind of love David Beckham received at AC Milan than the awkwardness of the relationship forged with Cole.
Yet whilst Roma may be interested in the deal, it is thought that wage demands may be a huge stumbling block. Cahill is being paid £100,000 a week and it would take a huge amount out of the Italian side’s budget to bring in the England international.
Added to that there is very little indication that Chelsea are even looking to sell. The loss of the player would leave them exposed at centre back, despite the signing of New York Red Bulls Matt Miazga which is expected to go through this week.
It will remain to be seen if this deal goes through, but with the transfer window closing on 11pm Monday it will require some quick dealing from both sides to go through.
