Everton announced the loan signing of Eliaquim Mangala with just 13 minutes left in the transfer window after Manchester City gave the centre-back permission to leave.

Mangala was initially a target for Newcastle United after the Magpies missed out on a number of high-profile players, but their enquiry appeared to alert Everton to his availability and the Merseysiders swooped for the 26-year-old defender on the final day of the January transfer window.

In fact, the deal did not go through until after midnight, although Everton were able to secure a two-hour extension to complete the loan move after submitting a completed deal sheet before the 23:00 deadline. That meant that the Toffees has until 01:00 to complete the move, and confirmation finally came at 00:47 that Mangala had joined Sam Allardyce’s squad until the end of the season.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play for Everton and I cannot wait to pull on the royal blue jersey for the first time and give my all for the supporters,” Mangala said.

The centre-back has made nine appearances in the Premier League this season, helping Pep Guardiola’s to take a 15-point lead at the top of the table, but the acquisition of £57m defender Aymeric Laporte this week means that Mangala is now at best fourth-choice and that is only when Vincent Kompany is unavailable, given that both John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi are currently preferred ahead of him.

But while there was one in at Everton on deadline, there were two heading out of the club, with one move in particular infuriating Allardyce.

Twenty-year-old winger Ademola Looman completed a surprise switch to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the late hours of Wednesday night, and Allardyce used his post-match press conference after the 2-1 victory over Leicester City to voice his confusion over the matter, given the club wanted to send him to Championship front-runners Derby County.

“It is one of the most unusual situations I've been in where we have got some deals for him but he was adamant he chose Germany,” said Allardyce.

“We tried to persuade him not to because I think it is a big challenge for his development. His stubbornness meant he got his own way.

“I hope he proves us all wrong.”

Muhamed Besic also left the club on loan as he agreed a deal until the end of the season with Middlesbrough, but there was one planned exit that did not go through that left Allardyce just as bemused as he was with Lookman.

Midfielder Davy Klassen looked to be heading to Napoli, only for talks to surprisingly collapse before the deadline, and Allardyce’s admission that he did not know why that happened was made all the more surprising given that the former Ajax player has been told he is not in the manager’s first-team plans.

“I got the weirdest situation. A contract he has with a sporting company is one of the reasons why it failed,” said the Everton manager.

“We are disappointed but he should be far more disappointed than us that he is not playing for Napoli in the Italian league.

“I don't know why they couldn't get over the hurdles.”
