Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Transfer deadline day was once must-watch television.

Not because of the actual transfers, but because presenters would stand outside football grounds and be abused by crowds of fans.

Once upon a time not only was it possible for a football manager, Harry Redknapp, to lean out of his car window, trying to tap up various transfer targets, but crowds of supporters could make faces, shout obscenities, imitate the presenter, make noise and generally cause a nuisance.

Sky Sports presenter Jim White would pretend to be on two phones, inflatables would be tossed, grown men would wear morph suits.

It was glorious.

Then it all came crashing down in one fell swoop. The best moment ever also signalled the end of 'Deadline Day' (note the capital letters)... one of the presenters was attacked with a sex toy..

Now we just have ex-pros sitting around the studio discussing transfers that are probably not going to happen. There can be some humour in [name redacted] stumbling over the qualities of a Russian premier league striker he has never seen but, on the whole, it's boring and forgettable.

They didn't seem to get the message in Italy.

Behold as this Italian journalist loses his tember outside of Stamford Bridge.

Even if it's a fake it's still been the best moment of deadline day.
