David De Gea's proposed transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid sensationally collapsed last night amid a failure to lodge the relevant paperwork on time.

Which club was to blame for this failure is still unclear, although both seem to be blaming the other.

It was an embarrassing development for all concerned considering how long this particular proposed move had been rumbling on.

Both clubs had played hard ball, with Manchester United reluctant to be seen selling another of their star assets to Real Madrid without their terms being met. Meanwhile, officials at the Bernabeu were wary of paying too much for a player who will be out of contract in 12 months time and available for free.
