From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Your support makes all the difference.Chelsea are holding out for over £100m from Real Madrid for Eden Hazard, although sources close to both Stamford Bridge and the Bernabeu feel that the move will take place this summer.
The fact the Belgian’s contract runs out in 2020 and has no intention of signing a new deal has forced the London club’s hand, and left them resigned to making a business decision this year and selling the playmaker.
They will not do so cheaply though, and the situation around any potential deal has not gone smoothly.
Madrid president Florentino Perez has been hoping to do the deal for a clean €100m, but Chelsea are currently insistent on more and they are not yet close to an agreement.
Some close to Hazard’s camp have noted that the typical Madrid media campaign has ratcheted it up in the last week, and manager Zinedine Zidane was asked a pointed question about the 28-year-old in his weekly press conference.
While Madrid newspapers have claimed the deal is “on the point” of happening, The Independent understands there is still a lot of negotiating to do.
