Your support makes all the difference.Arsenal manager Unai Emery has admitted he “doesn’t know” if Aaron Ramsey is any closer to signing a new contract with the club, after the midfielder missed out on the pre-season penalty shootout victory over Chelsea.
Ramsey is into the last year of his contract and Arsenal are keen to avoid being put in the same situation they had with Alexis Sánchez last season.
Emery has repeatedly insisted that Ramsey is firmly part of his plans for the new season, but has admitted he is in the dark when it comes to knowing whether the Welshman will agree to a contract extension or not.
“I don’t know,” he replied when asked whether Ramsey was any closer to agreeing a deal with the club. “The contract is one question for the club and for the player.
“Our opinion, my opinion is clear, I want him to be with us. But it is one question for the player and the club. My opinion is he’s professional. He’s a player I want in this team.”
“Meanwhile I am very concentrated. I am focused. My focus is thinking every day for training, the player, for the match against Lazio on Saturday and then Manchester City.”
Emery had intended to start Ramsey in a more offensive position against Chelsea, in between Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, with Mattéo Guendouzi and Mohamed Elneny in defensive midfield.
However Ramsey suffered a muscular injury in the warm-up, costing him his place in the team. He was replaced by 18-year-old Emile Smith Rowe.
“He has one muscular injury and we decided not to start him playing the match because he is maybe a bigger risk for him,” Emery said. “I am waiting for the medical assessment and not a big problem.”
Arsenal impressed during the penalty shootout win, although the sight of Sead Kolasinac hobbling off in the second-half was also a concern for the club.
“Ramsey not a big problem, but Kolasinac is maybe different because it is his leg,” Emery added. “For that, we are waiting for the medical analysis.”
