From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Foxes are looking to strengthen their wide areas with Riyad Mahrez, Marc Albrighton and Jeffrey Schlupp being the only recognised wingers at the King Power Stadium.
Claudio Ranieri is also keen on signing a right-back, a position Elmohamady has been utilised in by Hull, and remains tentatively interested in Internazionale’s Yuto Nagatomo.
Should the former Chelsea boss switch his focus elsewhere, it is believed Swans midfielder Dyer may be available on a season-long loan deal.
Carrillo, 24, was first linked with Leicester by Sky Sports News and is a Peruvian international with 23 caps to his name, picking up a bronze medal at this year’s Copa America.
The East Midlands club, however, remain unsure if he is worth the asking price they have been cited by the Portuguese club after having a €12m (£8.8m) offer rejected.
Elmohamady remains an option and Leicester have made enquiries into his services but the fee sought after is in a similar bracket to the price it would take to secure Carrillo.
Speaking after the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth at the weekend, a result which preserved his unbeaten start to life with the Premier League outfit, Ranieri downplayed reports linking him with Nagatomo.
“I don't know, this is speculation,” he said. “I know Yuto very well because I coached him but there is not anything [to say].”
The 28-year-old Japan international has been at the San Siro since signing from Tokyo in 2011, making 117 appearances and scoring nine goals for the Nerazzurri, and played under the Italian manager during his brief spell there three years ago.
Meanwhile, defender Liam Moore is expected to complete a short-term loan switch, until January, to Championship side Bristol City after finding first-team opportunities hard to come by this season.
Leicester have already signed Shinji Okazaki (£7.5m), Robert Huth (£3m), Christian Fuchs (free), N'Golo Kante (£5.6m), Yohan Benalouane (£5.6m) and Gokhan Inler (£4.8m) so far this summer.
