Tottenham Hotspur gained a slender advantage in their League Cup semi-final against London rivals Chelsea as Harry Kane's penalty earned them a 1-0 win in the first leg at Wembley on Tuesday.
Kane's 26th-minute spot kick, his 160th goal for the club, means Mauricio Pochettino's side will be slight favourites to reach the final although there is plenty of work still to do.
The only goal of the evening arrived in unusual circumstances with referee Michael Oliver eventually awarding a penalty with the help of VAR after Spurs skipper Kane was adjudged to have been marginally onside before being taken out by Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Key fact
Spurs and Chelsea are set to meet in a League Cup semi-final for the third time, having also done so in 1971-72 and 2001-02 - the only fixture to be played more often at this stage is Arsenal against Spurs (four occasions).
48 minutes
Callum Hudson-Odoi can't retrieve Willian's chipped free kick over the wall, and on this occasion I don't believe VAR would have overturned the on-field offside flag raise.
A clever idea, but Paulo Gazzaniga safely collects.
50 minutes
Eden Hazard has a fleeting sight of goal but Spurs have enough bodies to force the Belgian to reconsider his shot, and Kiern Trippier deals with his stood up cross to the far post, conceding a corner.
The inswinging delivery is too close to Gazzaniga, who is again sure in his handling.
52 minutes
Great football, great shot, great save!
Lovely, quick interplay from Spurs allows Harry Kane the chance to unfurl the most firmly-struck of drives, rising to about three foot off the ground and rifling it's way towards the corner of the goal.
Kepa is equal to it with a firm arm sliding to his right to turn the ball past the post.
53 minutes
Eden Hazard looks a little frustrated as he again fails to properly bother Paulo Gazzaniga with a 25-yard shot.
54 minutes
Gazzaniga is getting peppered with these long-range efforts, and the latest from N'Golo Kante is better directed, with the goalkeeper fortunate that his defenders are fastest to react to the loose ball as he fails to beat the ball to safety.
56 minutes
Spurs are just allowing Chelsea to have to much run of the game. They are retreating into their shells a little and inviting pressure as the visitors look for a leveller.
Chelsea have had two-thirds of the second half possession...
58 minutes
What a chance for Andreas Christensen!
Eden Hazard's corner is one by Ross Barkley over Moussa Sissoko, and Christensen has stole in completely free at the far post.
He foolishly tries to stab the ball home with the outside of his right boot rather than go with his left, and skews it horribly wide.
An excellent opening.
59 minutes
Davinson Sanchez goes through the back of Eden Hazard and earns a caution from Michael Oliver.
61 minutes
Spurs are giving the ball away with too much regularity and it feels as if a leveller may be coming.
Pedro is being readied by Maurizio Sarri as Eden Hazard wins a corner...
63 minutes
Here comes the Spaniard, and it is telling that it is Willian rather than Callum Hudson-Odoi who is replaced.
What can Pedro add?
