Chelsea triumphed in a tumultuous contest at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium which saw the home side reduced to nine men, concede four goals and receive a standing ovation from their own fans at the end of the game.

Spurs started perfectly as Dejan Kulusevski cut in from the right side and saw his deflected effort find the back of the net in the sixth minute. The hosts almost doubled their lead only for Son Heung-Min’s goal to be ruled out for offside but the first of many VAR calls.

The video refs then chalked off a goal for Raheem Sterling before cancelling out Moises Caicedo’s equaliser. This VAR check also resulted in the first of Tottenham’s red card as Cristian Romero was judged to have seriously fouled Enzo Fernandez. Cole Palmer then slotted home the resultant penalty.

In the second half, Destiny Udogie clipped Sterling and earned a second booking causing Tottenham to finish the game with nine men. They kept Chelsea at before Sterling nipped in behind and played in Nicolas Jackson. He added two more goals in stoppage as Chelsea ran away with the game, but Spurs performance won over the fans and the scoreline doesn’t do their efforts justice.

Why Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham return shows what Chelsea are still missing

If some people at Tottenham had their way, or things had gone differently in the summer of 2021, Monday night would not be Mauricio Pochettino’s first return to the club since leaving. There was always an obstacle, though. Although it seemed like many elements might have been aligning to bring Pochettino back to White Hart Lane, both the manager and Spurs sensed it probably wasn’t right to go back.

The approach never came from either side. That left a lot of Spurs fans disappointed, and then feeling betrayed when he went to Chelsea. Such emotion was probably why the response to Ange Postecoglou’s arrival was so muted.

Had the Australian not defied every single argument against his appointment, the response for Pochettino on Monday might have been worse. A long-term sense of dissatisfaction might have fed into a resentment and angry reception. As it is, the mood at Tottenham is totally different. They’re loving Ange instead.

They have won just four matches since Graham Potter left in April, the fewest of any ever-present Premier League side over the same period.

Spurs are the 13th team to have 26 points or more after 10 matches of a Premier League season. Six of the previous 12 went on to win the title, four were runners-up, Arsenal finished third in 2007-08 and Newcastle United were sixth in 1994-95.

Ange Postecoglou reveals ‘great admiration’ for Chelsea rival Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou has plenty of admiration for Mauricio Pochettino’s appetite to take on a “big challenge” but has suggested he would never allow others to take complete control of recruitment.

Pochettino’s Chelsea visit Spurs on Monday with the west London club struggling for a second consecutive season despite an outlay of £1billion since Todd Boehly took over with his Clearlake Capital consortium last year.

While Pochettino has failed to hit the ground running and acknowledged at the end of September he would “need to be more involved now” with regard to the January transfer window, it is a different story for Postecoglou and his summer transfers.

Tottenham’s 26 points from their opening 10 league games is their best start to a top-flight season since 1960-61, when they won their first 10 and went on to take the title.

Will history repeat itself?

Pochettino explains how Tottenham’s game can suit Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino says that Tottenham’s attacking style of play could suit his Chelsea team and give them space to run into the final third.

Chelsea have had some success this season against teams who prefer to have the ball and they have come undone against stubborn defensive sides like Brentford.

“When we play against blocks that play so low, we struggle to find and to understand a little bit the positional game and movement. When we have space, we can perform better and create more chances,” said Pochettino.

“You need to have the capacity to be mature. We are talking about a young team who need to grow. You need to be patient. You have to understand the time in the game: when you need to attack, when you need to keep calm and keep possession and circulate the ball.

“These are all things that come with time. At the moment we don’t have time. That’s why we struggle with blocks that play so low. We start to rush decisions, and make mistakes, and not be in positions where we should be. We lost the Nottingham Forest, Villa and Brentford games in transition.

“At 0-0, we need to not lose patience, and keep believing for sure we are going to score. That hasn’t happened. For us that’s why it is better when we play a team that is going to attack you, and also give you space to run.”
