Follow live coverage as Southampton face Nottingham Forest today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.

The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola's side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. Chelsea remain big-spending, Manchester United's latest rebuild continues and both Tottenham and Newcastle will expect improvements this year - yet it was Aston Villa who snared fourth last term.

Meanwhile, it's Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:

Southampton are probing with the ball. Forest are set up so well though and Smallbone tries to put Armstrong in again. Murillo sees to the danger excellently.

Southampton come forward again, after Elanga charged at Bednarek. Brereton-Diaz switches it to Armstrong, yet Forest's defensive shape makes it difficult to find space. The Saints are contained, until Harwood-Bellis just floats the ball aimlessly out of play.

Smallbone tries to slide in Armstrong on the right. Murillo has other ideas though and sees the reverse pass out for a goal-kick with great anticipation.

As said, Forest have been the most threatening out of the two sides. Southampton have worked up an xG of just 0.14, with their forwards hardly troubling either Murillo or Milenkovic. Nuno Espirito Santo's side have built up an xG of 1.53, yet will require more offensive threat. Currently, the win probabilities haven't changed too much. Currently, Southampton have a 35.0% chance of victory. A draw sits at 36.0%, while a Forest win has gone down to 29.0% despite their attacking edge looking a little sharper.

The first half ends goalless here at St. Mary's as neither side could force a breakthrough in a 45 minutes that saw half-chances as the main method of currency. For Southampton, their confidence in possession in front of their home crowd was pleasant to watch, yet the final ball to the attacking third was often absent. For Forest, they saw glimpses of goal with the ever-present Chris Wood, as well as new centre-back Nikola Milenkovic at set-pieces. In fact, it was the latter which probably had the best chance of the game so far. Wood flashed a low ball back across the face of goal from the right, and the towering Serbian stopper couldn't get his feet right as it pinged wide. McCarthy has nearly been caught out on the ball, as the Trees have pressed hard. However, as seen with Gibbs-White's somewhat shoddy decision-making on the counter - they'll have to inject further attacking nous for the second period.

Aina's long throw from the left is nodded out of the box. Williams tries to wrap his foot round it and it just whizzes past the right post with venom. McCarthy was watching that one tentatively.

Sugawara floats a lovely ball over for Brereton-Diaz. The Chilean international heads it back to Walker-Peters, but he goes down under the challenge of his marker. It looks like he wants a penalty, but the ref says nothing. While the home boos ring out, Walker-Peters is just getting back to his feet, he was holding his ankle there.
