From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Hearts captain Steven Pressley admits it is "inevitable" that the club's goalkeeper Craig Gordon will leave Tynecastle to join a major European club.

The 23-year-old has been in fine form for the Jambos and Scotland in recent weeks, earning a clean sheet against France in the Euro 2008 qualifiers and producing a superb stop to save a point in the Edinburgh derby at Hibernian on Sunday.

The goalkeeper denied Rob Jones a winner in the 2-2 draw in the dying stages of the match, somehow managing to palm the ball clear of goal at full stretch.

The Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, has already voiced admiration for Gordon, who is contracted to the Tynecastle side until 2009, after Scotland defeated France on 7 October.

Now the Hearts captain believes the fans must make the most of Gordon's presence in the team before the inevitable move happens. Pressley said: "Ultimately, he is going to make a move, there is no doubt about that, and we should enjoy having him here while we do. It was important he signed a contract in the summer to remain at the club because, when he moves, it is important he moves somewhere he is going to be the No 1. There is no point in Craig Gordon moving and sitting on the bench for several years.

"In the last six months to a year, he has proved how good a goalkeeper he is. Even now, if he was to move to the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea, I think he would be going as their No 1 goalkeeper and that is very important.

"It is also very important for the club. They have helped his progression and have given him an opportunity to show his quality. So, with him contracted to the club for another few years, the club will benefit financially from it. In the end, both parties will go away happy and it is inevitable it is going to happen at some point."

* The former Scotland international John Collins has voiced his interest in the managerial vacancy at Hibernian. Tony Mowbray left the post last Friday to succeed Bryan Robson at West Bromwich Albion. His assistant Mark Venus is poised to join him at The Hawthorns after talks with the West Midlands club today.
