Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers has welcomed Steven Gerrard to the “land of no sleep” after his former player at Liverpool was named as the new manager of Rangers.

The pair will be cross-city rivals in Glasgow, and Rodgers will be keen to best someone he knows well. Rodgers has not lost to Rangers since arriving in Scotland, and Celtic secured the 2017-18 Scottish Premiership title with a 5-0 victory over their rivals last weekend.

“His role will be to make it work, my job is to try and make sure it doesn’t,” Rodgers said of Gerrard, who is taking his first managerial role and has appointed Gary McAllister as his assistant. The pair spent three seasons together at Anfield before Gerrard’s retirement in 2015. Rodgers left his post as Liverpool manager just a few months later, and has since rebuilt a somewhat tarnished reputation in Scotland.

Speaking ahead of Celtic’s game with Hearts, Rodgers said: “We look forward to it. It will be a intense game with a good atmosphere. We’re off the back of a brilliant performance. We have three league games left and we’ll try to finish them as strong as we can.”

Moussa Dembele and Stuart Armstrong should both be fit for Sunday’s game at Tyneside and Celtic have no other injury concerns.
