Wolves 1-1 Newcastle: A game low on chances and quality before late strikes traded by Jimenez and Murphy

Premier League rejects Project Big Picture

Wolverhampton Wanderers thought they had left it late to beat Newcastle United, but the Magpies found an even later goal to force a 1-1 draw in the Premier League.

The first half was largely devoid of clear chances, with a few set-pieces and cut-backs the only real moments for either side to create an opening, but Raul Jimenez and Callum Wilson both spurned half-sights of goal.

After the break it was more of the same, with little inspiration or ingenuity on show from either team.

A couple of half-hearted penalty appeals were turned down and it looked like Wolves had won it late on when Raul Jimenez struck from outside the box - only for Jacob Murphy to curl home a low, injury-time equaliser from a free-kick.

Here are the player ratings from the game at Molineux on Sunday.

Wolves

Rui Patricio - 5. Took a few high balls comfortably and largely had one of his easiest games of the season…until conceding in the 89th minute.

Willy Boly - 7. Comfortable on the ball, utterly untested at the back.

Conor Coady - 6. Did what he needed to do the few times Newcastle went long through the centre, though gave away the free-kick for the equaliser.

Max Kilman - 6. Beaten by Wilson once but recovered well to make a tackle and wasn’t tested much afterwards.

Nelson Semedo - 5. Fine on the overlap, little in the way of good delivery into the area.

Ruben Neves - 7. One of the few on the pitch capable of changing the pace or direction of the game.

Leander Dendoncker - 6. Won possession back a few times, unimaginative on the ball.

Roman Saiss - 5. A couple of early runs and crosses but little else from left wing-back.

Daniel Podence - 6. Teed up a couple of shots for his team-mates but couldn’t affect the game often enough.

Raul Jimenez - 6. Neat link-up play but well off-target with a couple of first-half shots and faded out of the game, until his late strike to put Wolves ahead.

Pedro Neto - 6. A livewire with his dribbling but the final pass or shot was usually wayward.

Newcastle

Karl Darlow - 6. Did well with aerials and a couple of routine saves but might be disappointed to not save Jimenez’s strike.

Fabian Schar - 7. Repelled the balls into the box with regularity. Good concentration throughout.

Federico Fernandez - 6. Similar to Schar with clearances, but on the deck he was beaten a few times by Neto or Podence.

Jamaal Lascelles - 7. All three centre-backs were competent and consistent with their aerial wins and doing the basics well.

Jacob Murphy - 7. Did some good defensive work in an unfamiliar role, but not really able to show his attacking talent - until the late equalising free-kick.

Ryan Fraser - 5. Strange role for him, essentially a central midfielder when defending. Struggled to get close to Neves and co.

Jeff Hendrick - 5. Lots of running and work rate but he’s not a holding midfielder.

Miguel Almiron - 6. One of the few who looked to instigate a counter-attacking threat for his team but very little quality in the final third.

Jamal Lewis - 5. Not really used as an outlet and bypassed by Adama several times after he came on.

Allan Saint-Maximin - 4. Never got involved, gave the ball away easily when in a few promising positions.

Callum Wilson - 5. Got in behind the defence with one good run but delayed his shot. Not much in the way of link play.
