Mauricio Pochettino recalled Erik Lamela in his first match in charge of Tottenham after the Argentina striker impressed in pre-season, with Spurs looking to gain revenge against West Ham after last season’s 3-0 whitewash.

Spurs suffered three defeats to the Hammers last season, but Pochettino has called on Lamela to make the difference after he missed the second half of his debut campaign. Lamela endured a season to forget at White Hart Lane last term as poor form and a back injury kept him out of Tim Sherwood’s side, but he looks to be a key figure of Pochettino’s starting XI.

With Kyle Walker sill absent, Kyle Naughton starts at right-back with new-signing Eric Dier also named in the starting line-up, while Nabil Betaleb features in the centre of midfield alongside Etienne Capoue. Andros Townsend is named on the bench, alongside a returning Lewis Holtby after his loan-spell with Fulham last season.

Summer signings Ben Davies and Michel Vorm miss out on the match-day squad altogether.

For West Ham, they are without key striker Andy Carroll until the New Year after he suffered another ankle injury in pre-season, so Carlton Cole is asked to lead the line as Sam Allardyce looks to introduce more attacking and beautiful football at Upton Park.

Line-ups:

West Ham: Adrian, O'Brien, Reid, Collins, Cresswell, Noble, Drampis, Vaz Te, Nolan, Downing, Cole.

Subs: Zarate, Demel, Diame, Jaaskelainen, Poyet, Valencia, Burke.

Tottenham Hotspur: Lloris, Naughton, Kaboul, Dier, Rose, Bentaleb, Capoue, Lennon, Lamela, Eriksen, Adebayor.

Subs: Soldado, Holtby, Townsend, Kane, Dawson, Friedel, Davies.

Referee: Chris Foy (Merseyside)
