Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick as Manchester City began their Premier League title defence with a 5-0 win against West Ham .
The game also saw the very first decision overturned by VAR in the Premier League, Sterling saw a goal ruled out for offside and Sergio Aguero was given a chance to retake a saved penalty after Lukas Fabianski moved in front of his line before saving.
Sterling doubled City’s lead after the break following Gabriel Jesus’ opening goal and from then it became a case of how many Pep Guardiola’s side would score.
A well-timed run from deep was found by Mahrez for his second, and the third, after Aguero’s penalty, came in similar fashion.

Poor footwork put him in awkward positions.

West Ham vs Man City player ratings Ryan Fredericks - 5 Rarely had the chance to venture forward and spent the majority of the game going a reasonable job on Zinchenko

West Ham vs Man City player ratings Fabio Balbuena - 5 Did not offer a great deal of assurance that West Ham have found a good centre back partnership. De Bruyne eased past him like he wasn’t there en route to setting up Sterling to score.
REUTERS
West Ham vs Man City player ratings Issa Diop - 5 Could have done better at the front post to clear Walker’s low cross to Jesus for the first goal. Did not look especially set throughout.

West Ham vs Man City player ratings Aaron Cresswell - 3 Struggled against Walker and Mahrez with little help. Was always second-best in dangerous one-on-one situations.

West Ham vs Man City player ratings Rodri - 6 Fernandinho’s shoes take some filling and Rodri will quickly find that out. He was mostly good on the ball but was caught in possession in dangerous areas a couple of times, one which resulted in a VAR check for a penalty to see if he fouled Lanzini in the box afterwards.
