Wayne Rooney has not asked to leave Everton amid reports linking the former Manchester United captain with a move to the MLS with DC United.

Manager Sam Allardyce revealed he has had no conversations with the former England international about him leaving, but that he was aware of interest from the MLS side and there had been “some negotiation”.

Rooney returned to Goodison Park at the start of the season on a two-year deal after 13 trophy-laden years at Manchester United. He scored the last of his 11 goals for the Toffees in December with Allardyce suggesting in recent weeks he could not guarantee him a regular starting spot next season.

However, reports that a £12m fee has already been agreed with Everton are wide of the mark.

“There seems to have been some negotiation [on Rooney] but I'll find out more when Wayne arrives today,” Allardyce. “There appears to be an interest from DC United but where that lies I can't tell you at the moment.

“Let's put this right, Wayne Rooney has not asked to leave, nor has he had a consultation with me.

“It's not about Wayne Rooney, it's about West Ham. I've answered all the questioned on Rooney.”

Allardyce also insisted he is not leaving Goodison Park during the summer, despite the very obvious murmurings of discontent at how he has his side playing.

“I've got a contract,” he added. “Until such time someone says to me that they no longer want me to fulfil it, I have a contract.

“Recruitment next summer is the start of the process to try and achieve that goal [top 6]. The next level of recruitment have to be quality players to make us better than this moment in time.

“We still need another goalscorer who gets 15 or more goals in the Premier League next year.”
