From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Wayne Rooney has revealed which of his team-mates, past and present, who he would least like to be stuck in a lift with – because they’re “just annoying”.

The Manchester United and England captain was quizzed by Sport magazine over who he would least like to spend some time alone with, and he immediately named former United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard, citing “he’s just annoying”.

Lindegaard left United this summer to join West Bromwich Albion, but he has made just one appearance this season which came in the 3-0 Capital One Cup defeat by Norwich in September.

Having made just 19 Premier League appearances during his four years at Old Trafford, you’d hope that the two would be able to forge a relationship that would see past each other’s annoying traits.

Rooney also revealed his favourite athlete outside of football in the form of four-time Olympic gold medallist Michael Johnson, while he unsurprisingly named Cristiano Ronaldo as the most talented player he has ever shared a pitch with.

Comically, Rooney named animation hero Johnny Bravo as his all-time favourite cartoon character, although we’ll put down to watching the TV show with his two sons, Kai and Klay, rather than humouring his time off with cartoons.
