Swansea scored twice in the last five minutes to beat Watford 2-1, moving them up to 19th in the table, ahead of West Bromwich Albion. Carvalhal hopes that the win will improve confidence and belief in the squad, but he admitted in his post-match press conference that they are still a long way from comfort or happiness.
“Because we won one game, we are not in paradise, with the birds and flowers,” Carvalhal joked. “It will be very, very hard. We have a difficult game against Tottenham on Tuesday, which will not be easy, and we have a very short time to prepare the strategy of the team.”
While Carvalhal said that him and his team have always believed that Swansea can stay up, he said that this win should start to convince more people of that too.
“Before this game, I said that if you ask 100 persons of football, they will all say that we will be relegated,” he explained. “In this moment, I believe that 98 will say that we will be relegated. It is still a small percentage. We are still not in a good position. But confidence is more high, belief is more high. Me, my players, my chairman, the fans, we are not part of this 100. We believe. It will be very tough until the end. But this is the first step.”
Carvalhal said that the confidence from this win would help to inspire the team to improve over the second half of the season. “Because we won everything is not perfect, and even if we did not win, not everything would be bad,” he said. “But now confidence will be more high, with a clear idea of the way that we want to play. The dynamic will be better, and we can achieve more points.”
