If anyone was in any doubt, Michael Owen is worth his weight in gold to Liverpool. The 23-year-old struck a vital goal in their Uefa Cup tie against Olimpija Ljubljana, with the second leg to come at Anfield on 15 October after Wednesday's 1-1 draw.

Owen now holds Liverpool's European scoring record of 21. But his manager, Gérard Houllier, will soon have to face negotiations for the renewal of Owen's contract, which runs out in 21 months' time.

The striker wants to stay at Anfield but Owen's advisors know they have the upper hand. Liverpool will not want to lose him on the Bosman ruling at the end of next season, and Owen has hinted he wants the team style to become more attacking to suit his game.
