He joins the likes of Andriy Shevchenko, David Beckham, Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos and Walter Samuel who have put club pedigree above money.
Chelsea maintained there was "no formal offer" made to Ronaldinho despite the Brazilian claiming he turned down a move to Stamford Bridge.
Mario Melchiot is in talks with Spanish club Villarreal about leaving Stamford Bridge. The Dutch defender can leave for nothing and is expected to accept a deal with the side who made the last four of the Uefa Cup. Villarreal want to beat off Premiership interest for Melchiot.
