Your support makes all the difference.Liverpool have announced that young England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has signed a new contract with the club in what they describe as a ‘long-term deal’.
The Independent understands that the right-back has signed a new five-year deal through to 2024, tying down one of the brightest emerging talents in Gareth Southgate’s England squad after enjoying a breakthrough season in 2017/18.
Alexander-Arnold has gone on to force his way into Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool starting line-up this season as his first-choice right-back, resulting in Nathanial Clyne leaving for Bournemouth on loan, and his performances throughout the first half of a Premier League campaign that sees Liverpool top of the table have earned him a new deal.
Speaking after the deal was announced, the 20-year-old said: “I’m ecstatic and really proud. I feel privileged to have the support and the trust the club has in me to offer me a new deal.
“There was no doubt in my mind to sign and extend the years I have with the club. Hopefully we can achieve a lot of success in those years.
“As soon as they offered the contract, there was no hesitation whatsoever. The thing that made it easiest for me was having the people around me to make sure I was able to focus on football as much as possible and get the deal done as soon as possible. That is down to my brother especially, my manager, who took that role and allowed me to focus on football and not get distracted, which is the main thing.
“The last 18 months especially have been very special. Hopefully the next 18 months and even further on than that will be even more special.”
Having won five international caps under Southgate in 2018, Alexander-Arnold looks to have a bright England future ahead of him, but his first priority will be to help Liverpool end their 29-year wait for the English league title, having last finished top in 1989/90 – while also helping the Reds to challenge on the European stage as they face Bayern Munich in the Champions League last-16.
But the news of his extension is the latest boost in what has been a long line of contract renewals, with left-back Andy Robertson signing a new deal earlier this week, while Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane and Joe Gomez have all extended their stays since April 2018.
