Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Shaky in possession once early on, but kicked well and produced several smart stops. A welcome return.
Walker - 5
Strong breaks forward were again blighted by lapses in his own third. Arnautovic pushed him to the limit.
Alderweireld - 5
The Belgian was solid, stroking the ball around well but undid his hard work as he conceded the penalty.
Vertonghen - 6
Solid. Diouf proved to be a real handful but the Belgian had him under wraps until late on.
Davies - 6
The Welshman is not content to be Rose's deputy. His performance was solid and he showed hunger to set up Chadli's goal.
Mason - 5
The jury is still out. Encouraging in some aspects, but looks unlikely to add goals to his game.
Dier - 7
The most accomplished performance he has produced in midfield so far. Deserved his goal.
Dembele - 6
Full of beans. Can occasionally look lackadaisical but he was at the races today, drifting across the park.
Chadli - 6
His touch let him down at a crucial moment but made amends by tucking home the second goal.
Eriksen - 6
He made several superb passes, but was guilty of a couple poor misplaced ones too. Yet to truly find his groove.
Kane - 6
A relatively quiet day for the striker. Had the ball in the net but it was ruled out for offside. Ran for the team all day.
Subs: Bentaleb - 4
Could not curb the tide as Stoke took control late on.
Lamela - 4
Brought on for Kane but did little of note.
STOKE CITY: Butland - 7
A couple of excellent early saves kept his side in it. The Stoke crowd regularly chanted 'England's number one'. Maybe one day.
Johnson - 5
Much of Stoke's play was focused down the left flank and the Englishman got little change out of Davies or Dembele.
Muniesa - 5
Composed in possession for the most part, but lacked the confidence to bring the ball out on occasion.
Cameron - 6
Physical presence in the air helped to nullify Kane.
Pieters - 5
Didn't get much help in regards to tracking back from Arnautovic
Whelan - 5
Deployed as a shield to the back four, but struggled to curb or stifle the movement of Spurs' interchangeable midfield.
Van Ginkel - 5
Lost Dier for the goal and struggled to get a foothold in the game. Subbed off on the hour.
Arnautovic - 6
Technically very good, but his desire is questionable. Got the better of Walker on plenty of occasions but his final ball was lacking. Composed penalty.
Afellay - 6
The former Barcelona forward did not get the ball at his feet all too often but impressed. Could be an important figure this season.
Walters - 5
Plenty of effort, minimal product from the Irishman. Most of his work was done off the ball.
Diouf - 6
Starved of opportunities, missed the key chance just before the break that would have levelled the scores. Got his goal in the end. Never gave up.
Subs: Ireland - 6
Made a real difference in the second half. Will be pushing for a start next week.
Joselu - 6
Hauled down for the goal by Alderweireld, solid cameo.
