Tottenham Hotspur moved back into the top four with a comprehensive 5-2 Boxing Day victory over Southampton as Harry Kane scored his second hat-trick in the space of four days to break Alan Shearer's 22-year record for the most Premier League goals scored in a calendar year and cement his place as Europe's top goalscorer in 2017.

The striker needed just 22 minutes to give Spurs the lead as he headed in a Christian Eriksen free-kick from point-blank range, before doubling his haul in the 38th minute when he got onto the end of a cross from Son Heung-min.

Dele Alli continued the scoring after half-time as he struck a low curling effort beyond the reach of Fraser Forster, before South Korea international Son made it four as he finished calmly beyond the onrushing Forster.

With the win in the bag, Spurs relaxed and Southampton found the back of the net through Sofiane Boufal, but it would not stop Kane from adding his third and an eighth hat-trick of the year.

Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic came off the bench to score a final consolation, but Saints were well beaten and the day belonged to Kane.
