The French midfielder has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence at Spurs this campaign, dispelling suggestions that he was destined for the exit by forcing his way into Pochettino’s first-team plans and emerging as one of their players of the season.
Sissoko looks set to play a key role in midfield for the Champions League final against Liverpool on 1 June, but Pochettino set alarm bells ringing by admitting he could leave Spurs if they were to go all the way in Europe and win a first Champions League trophy.
But when Sissoko was asked specifically about whether his future at Tottenham revolves around Pochettino staying, the midfielder responded by claiming it is not out of the question that the Argentina leaves the club and a new manager comes in.
“Not necessarily, I don't know,” Sissoko told Get French Football News. “At the end of the season, it could be that they have a new project, that a new coach comes, and he doesn't count on me, he wants to sell me.
“Many different things could happen. But for the moment I feel good there, I am happy there. And in my head I have no thoughts of leaving.”
Sissoko is contracted to Spurs until the summer of 2021, but his form this season has rekindled a relationship that looked to burning out just 12 months ago.
The former Newcastle midfielder was on the outside looking in and a prime candidate to leave the squad last summer, but Tottenham’s failure to bring in any new signings gave him a stay of execution and he responded with the most impressive season of his career to date.
As a result, the prospect of him leaving this summer looks far unlikelier, and while he admitted that circumstances can chance in the smallest instance, he is looking forward to his future at the club.
“Today I feel good over there, this year everything is going well for me,” he added. “I am still under contract with them so all is good. But as he (Serge Aurier) said, and you know it better than me, anything can happen in football very quickly.”
