Tottenham claimed their first win at the home of Manchester United under the management of Mauricio Pochettino on Monday night, thanks to a Harry Kane header and a brace by Lucas Moura.
The victory came just three days after Lloris, Tottenham’s goalkeeper and club captain, was stopped by police in west London and subsequently charged with drink-driving.
The 31-year-old, who has made 257 appearances for Tottenham since joining in 2012, apologised “wholeheartedly” for his actions in a statement on Friday and is expected to be internally disciplined by the club.
Lloris was taunted with chants regarding his arrest by the Old Trafford crowd on Monday but ended the night with a clean sheet and a memorable three points to celebrate.
When asked whether Tottenham had secured an ideal result, Lloris said: “Yes, there are always some key moments in the season and I think this game came at the perfect time.
“It was a tough week, especially because of my mistake [his drink-driving charge] but I think the team showed [we are] strong.
“We showed again the togetherness in Tottenham and we made a great game against United. It is always a big challenge to come to Old Trafford to face United and this time we got the result that we wanted.”
Tottenham had lost four consecutive league matches at Old Trafford without scoring before Monday and the victory will be seen in some quarters as evidence that Pochettino’s side are improving and can mount a serious title charge this year.
Lloris, who captained France to victory at this summer’s World Cup in Russia, believes that by beating last season’s Premier League runners-up, he and his team-mates proved they are ready to take another step up.
“It’s true the last few years the club hasn’t won a lot but it is a special place and even more with the new stadium which is coming soon,” he said.
“We have a lot of talented players, a young team, a brilliant manager, one of the best in the world, with his staff. There is everything there to enjoy football and this is what we are going to try again this season. We are going to try to step up again all together.
“We know the Premier League is a big challenge because there are a lot of fantastic teams. It is very exciting to face that type of team and today we had a great answer as a team together.”
