Roy Keane hits out at Liverpool and Tottenham's 'embarrassing' trophy hauls

With only two League Cups between them since 2008, Keane believes the clubs need to be winning more trophies

Roy Keane has branded Liverpool and Tottenham’s lack of trophies in the past decade as “embarrassing”.

Although both sides impressed on the European stage this week, with Liverpool running five past Porto while Tottenham held Juventus to a 2-2 draw in Turin, a failure to deliver when it matters most has hampered their silverware success in recent years.

With only two League Cups between them since 2008, Keane believes the clubs need to be winning more trophies.

Speaking on Wednesday night, he said: “For a club the size of Liverpool and Tottenham, one trophy in 10 years is pretty embarrassing.

“I know the Champions League has taken over now, particularly with the money behind it, but to be successful to be a big club you need to win trophies.”

Tottenham’s last trophy came in the 2008 League Cup final after beating Chelsea while Liverpool recorded success in the same competition four years later.

But since then, both clubs have repeatedly fallen short in the likes of the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Premier League.

Keane added: “The clubs you’re talking about Liverpool and Spurs should be able to compete in the Champions League and certainly qualify, and win an FA Cup or a League Cup.

“(Of) course you should be able to win an FA Cup or a League Cup, that should go hand in hand.”
