Vertonghen, who has played every Premier League game for Spurs this season, fell awkwardly during his side’s 3-1 win at Selhurst Park and later left the ground on crutches.
A statement on Tottenham’s official Twitter account read: “Further assessment and scans have confirmed @Jan-Vertonghen sustained damage to his medial collateral ligament in his knee at Palace. Our medical staff will continue to monitor his progress during his rehabilitation to determine when he will be ready to return to training.”
Vertonghen has formed a formidable partnership with fellow Belgian Toby Alderweireld this season, with Tottenham’s 19 goals conceded standing as the best defensive record in the top flight.
The 28-year-old moved to White Hart Lane from Ajax in the summer of 2012.
