Emmanuel Adebayor opened the scoring for the home side with a well taken header from Ryan Mason's cross.
But after halftime, and thanks to an inspired substitution from Alan Pardew, Newcastle got back into the game when Sammy Ameobi headed in with his first touch.

Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Show all 23 1 /23Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Hugo Lloris 5/10 Had very little to do but pick the ball out of his net on a couple of occasions. Couldn’t be faulted for either goal.

Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Eric Dier 4 An afternoon for to forget for the right-back. The youngster switched off to allow Sammy Ameobi to get in behind to equalise and then allowed Remy Cabella to cross for Newcastle’s winner. His confidence looked shot after that.

Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Younes Kaboul 5 Will come off the pitch wondering how his team lost given that he had very little to do. Might have done better to cut out the cross for Ayote Perez’s goal but the Spurs captain didn’t have a bad game.

Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Jan Vertonghen 5 Looked secure as he returned to the starting lineup for a Premier League match, but still ended up on the losing side.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Danny Rose 7 Spurs’ best player on the day, as he provided plenty of width down the left-hand side and was a constant outlet for the hosts when they went forward.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Etienne Capoue 5 Helped Spurs control the match in the first half but struggled after the interval and was replaced by Harry Kane as Spurs went in search of an equaliser.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Ryan Mason 6 A very impressive first-half display from the 23-year-old including setting up Emmanuel Adebayor’s goal with a pinpoint cross. It was a different story in the second period however as the midfielder couldn’t get on the ball and faded badly.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Christian Eriksen 5 Drifted in and out of the match, and only showed his considerable quality in flashes.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Nacer Chadli 5 Very disappointing – the Belgian wasted a couple of decent openings and was completely predictable in the way he cut onto his right foot whenever he ran at the Newcastle defenders.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Erik Lamela 4 Very poor from the Argentine winger – kept giving the ball away and looked totally short of ideas whenever he took on the Magpies back four. Made way for Aaron Lennon in the 78th minute, the only surprise was that he wasn't substituted earlier.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Emmanuel Adebayor 6 Took his goal well, and offered a focal point to the Spurs attacks but his influenced waned after the break and he came for Roberto Soldado in the 83rd minute.

Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Tim Krul 6 Used all his knowhow to help Newcastle run down the clock, and was a calming presence on his back four as he came out with authority to claim crosses.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Daryl Janmaat 5 Struggled against the forward bursts of Rose and couldn’t offer much himself going forward.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Fabricio Coloccini 6 Marshaled the defence well and got to grips with Adebayor as the match went on.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Steven Taylor 6 Grew into the match and made some vital blocks and interceptions as Spurs looked for the equaliser.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Paul Dummett 7 Dealt well with Lamela, and snapped into tackles when Lennon was brought on to run at him.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Vurnon Anita 5 Overwhelmed in the centre of midfield as Capoue and Mason took charge in the opening 45 minutes and was taken off at half-time.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Jack Colback 6 Battled gamely and provided gorgeous defence splitting pass for Sammy Ameobi’s goal. Got forward to fire off a couple of shots as well.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Gabriel Obertan 4 Couldn’t cope with Rose’s bursts forward, offered nothing in an attacking sense, and was hauled off at half-time.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Moussa Sissoko 7 Superb stuff from the Frenchman, who never stopped working for his team and showed real composure on the ball to always pick the right pass.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Yoan Gouffran 6 A performance that must be placed in the ‘put in a shift’ category – the forward fed off scarps for the most part but never stopped working for his team.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Ayoze Perez 6 Looked out of his depth in the first period but scored the winner with well-taken header and visibly grew in confidence thereafter.
GETTY IMAGES
Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Player ratings Best of the Bench: Sammy Ameobi 7 Scored within six second of coming on as a half-time substitute and was always a threat with his pace on the counter-attack.
