Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Ahead of the Premier League meeting between Sunderland and Newcastle this weekend, we caught up with a couple of fans for their take on the match...
Sunderland fan - Joe Cooper
Same story, different year - that should be the motto of Sunderland fans. Languishing at the wrong end of the table at this stage of the season is now something of a tradition for us.
Even the arrival of a new manager didn't lift the lads enough to secure a point against West Brom last time out, but the next game is the biggie and all will be forgotten if we can secure yet another win over the Mags.
You may point to the fact that they obliterated Norwich 6-2 in their last game and will head into the clash as favourites. But form counts for nothing heading into the derby and both teams will be on an equal footing, no matter what the bookies say.
And recent history is on our side. We’ve just changed manager and everybody in the North East knows what that means. I’m going 2-1 to Sunderland.
Newcastle fan - Russell Hughes
This is it. This is the big one. This is the time to get revenge.
Two weeks ago, I would have said that we are dead and buried for the derby, especially with our record, but now I’m filled with hope and the strangest of feelings - excitement.
It’s been such a long time since I was last excited about a Sunderland game, but following on from the fantastic result against Norwich, Newcastle are actually the team heading into the fixture with form on their side.
Of course, all that highlights is how woeful north east football has been this season, but you have to take comfort in small mercies.
Georginio Wijnaldum has found form, Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic look like they were born to play up front together and Moussa Sissoko played like the juggernaut we all now he can. The omens are good.
The Blacks Cats will scrap hard, they’ll fight for everything and they’ll pose a threat because this is still Newcastle we’re talking about - but I think momentum will win the day and right now, the Magpies have it.
Newcastle to win 2-1 for me, with Sissoko and Mitrovic to score.
