Steven Gerrard now has a maximum of just five Premier League games left after he was sent off for a stamp on Ander Herrera immediately following a strong tackle on Juan Mata in Liverpool's match against old rivals Manchester United at Anfield.

The Liverpool captain came on as a substitute in the game, and lasted just 38 seconds before his dismissal for the stamp by referee Martin Atkinson.

It was Liverpool's 50th red card in Premier League history too.

The 34-year-old Gerrard will move to the MLS in the summer to play for Los Angeles Galaxy.

Liverpool needed a win to overtake rivals United in the race for a Champions League spot but will now be without the former England captain for the next three games after the straight red card.

Juan Mata put the Red Devils ahead with a neat finish in the first half before scoring a wonderful overhead kick later on to deepen Liverpool's misery.

Daniel Sturridge later reduced the deficit for Liverpool after a well-worked move, but his effort was in vain, the home side lost 2-1.
