A superb brace by Felipe Anderson gave West Ham United a 2-1 comeback win at Southampton in a pulsating Premier League match on Thursday.

The result lifted West Ham to ninth in the table on 27 points from 19 games while Southampton stayed 16th on 15 points, three above the relegation zone after suffering their first home defeat in five matches.

The game sprung to life when Southampton forward Nathan Redmond bundled the ball home with his shoulder in the 50th minute after visiting keeper Lukazs Fabianski parried his initial shot and Oriol Romeu's rebound.

In the absence of first-choice strikers Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez, West Ham lacked cutting edge until Brazilian midfielder Anderson turned the match on its head.

Anderson equalised in the 53rd minute with a stinging first-time shot from 20 metres and completed West Ham's comeback in the 57th when he buried the ball into the top right corner from 13 metres to cap a lightning break by the visitors.

Fabianski had kept out a long-range effort by forward Stuart Armstrong at the other end and marshalled his defence superbly in the closing stages as the Saints threw men forward in search of an equaliser.

13 mins: Southampton 0-0 West Ham

Southampton look a well organised outfit under Hasenhuttl. They're set up in a 3-4-3 again tonight with Redmond and Armstrong just behind Danny Ings in attack.

16 mins: Southampton 0-0 West Ham

It's been a pretty even game thus far. West Ham look comfortable in possession, but they've been unable to trouble the Saints' backline.

19 mins: Southampton 0-0 West Ham

A first shot of the evening for West Ham and it was a typical Robert Snodgrass effort. The Scotsman cuts in from the right hand side before unleashing an effort from outside the box, but it's an easy save for Alex McCarthy.

Southampton launch another attack. Armstrong picks up the ball on the left hand side before curling an effort way wide of the goal.

22 mins: Southampton 0-0 West Ham

Huge, huge chance for West Ham, who should lead. Felipe Anderson carries the ball forward, before playing in Cresswell on the left side. The full-back sends in an excellent cross towards an unmarked Lucas Perez, who scuffs a first time effort wide.

Let off for Southampton.

You get the feeling that Ralph Hasenhuttl won't be entirely happy with his side's first half performance here.

They look dangerous in attack but their back three have been shaky at times.

Excellent work from West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, who brings a halt to Mario Lemina's surge forward and clears the danger.

Danny Ings is certainly playing with the confidence of a striker that's scored three goals in his last two matches. He looks a real threat.

29 mins: Southampton 0-0 West Ham

A good spell of possession for West Ham. Antonio gets forward again before seeing his cross cleared. Cresswell's ball in is headed out for a corner by Targett.

Southampton clear easily but fail to retain possession. Hasenhuttl is becoming increasingly animated on the touchline.
