Mark Hughes’ side were due to stay at the Marriott hotel ahead of the game, but found their booking cancelled at the last minute. The hotel cited an illness afflicting guests as the reason for the cancellation, but manager Mark Hughes thought differently.
"We suspected that maybe some of the dark arts were at work but we didn't let it affect us,” Hughes said after his side’s win. “It helped our focus. We used it as a motivating factor.
“I'm not for one minute suggesting Swansea had anything to do with that. Maybe it was over-zealous Swansea fans in positions to affect our hotel booking."
The Saints were forced to instead switch to the more inconvenient Vale Resort near Cardiff, over 30 miles from the Liberty Stadium but following the crucial win it appears the club can see the funny side.
They posted a humorous false review of the Marriott to the club’s Twitter account discussing an important "business trip" that had been affected by the move.
The review went on to clarify that "the experience didn’t sour our trip" and that the business meeting was "extremely productive."
Manolo Gabbiadini’s winner likely secures Southampton’s place in next season’s Premier League and Hughes is glad to have seen his side overcome the adversity and stay up.
"I'm delighted for the club. It's not done mathematically but we've put ourselves in a good position," he added. "We've come in and found a group of guys who needed a bit more direction and a bit more belief.
"They've worked their socks off. They were immense against Swansea and weren't going to be denied."
