Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Colombian international is currently on a season-long loan from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco, and Manchester United can make the deal permanent this summer for a fee of £43 million.
But having scored just four Premier League goals this season, the future of the 29-year-old striker is anything but certain, and the former Porto and Atletico Madrid star is reportedly a target of Juventus.
But Falcao’s mother, Carmenza Zarate, insists that her son has ‘nothing to prove’ to Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal, and that the Dutchman treats the striker in same way as Angel di Maria and Robin van Persie in a bid to bring success back to Old Trafford.
"We have to respect Van Gaal as a coach and his method of working," she told El Espectador. "I don't think it's something personal with Falcao, because he also does it with Angel Di Maria and Robin van Persie. It's his way of working, and you have to respect it. He has to deliver results for Manchester United and we'll see whether he achieves that.
"Falcao has nothing to prove to the media, to Van Gaal, to anybody,” she continued. “He knows what he can do as a footballer and that there is a good reason he has got to Manchester United. We have to wait and take things as they come.
"It's not a normal situation given what he has experienced in his career, but it happens in football. If God shows him a new path, he'll leave Manchester.
"If not, he'll stay."
