Every week, The Independent's digital sports team picks out the key players, performances and talking points from the weekend's Premier League action.
Under pressure Newcastle manager Alan Pardew seems as if he has received a stay of execution from the club's owner Mike Ashley, despite his team going down 1-0 away to Stoke City.
Pardew and his Newcastle team made it no wins out of six this season after a Peter Crouch goal ensured they came away from The Britannia empty-handed and remain rock bottom of the Premier League.
While Rooney had a weekend to forget, Saturday's Merseyside Derby will stay long in the memory of Everton's Phil Jagielka. His last minute thunderbolt ensured Everton could take a point away from Anfield, against a Liverpool side who are severely lacking the firepower of talisman Daniel Sturridge.
The other big derby of the weekend saw Arsenal come up against bitter north London rivals Tootenham at The Emirates. The result may have been a draw but Arsenal's injury woes were compounded as they lost captain Mikel Arteta, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere during the clash.
