From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Gary Hoffman has been appointed as the new chairman of the Premier League.

The league said clubs had voted unanimously in favour of his appointment, and he will now succeed interim chair Claudia Arney on June 1.

Hoffman said: “Football has been central to my life as a fan, an administrator and in my business career, so it is an honour to join the Premier League as chair.”

Hoffman is the current chairman of Monzo Bank Limited, Hastings Group Holdings plc and the Coventry Building Society.

The statement from the league said he would leave Hastings before taking on his new role at the Premier League.

Hoffman has previously served as chairman of the Football Foundation and Coventry, and was appointed to lead Northern Rock through its Government bailout.

He added: “During my time at the Football Foundation, I saw how the growth of the Premier League, to become the world’s most-watched sporting competition, helped it play an increasingly pivotal role in communities across the country.

“Now everyone in football, at home and abroad, is coming together to support one another through the Covid-19 pandemic. I am convinced this spirit of togetherness will help the game we cherish, and the Premier League, endure long into the future.” PA
