A Premier League player has been arrested on suspicion of rape and false imprisonment.

The Daily Mail initially reported on Thursday night that the player was arrested over an alleged incident that occurred last month at his house.

The player, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested at his home on Wednesday morning, before being released pending further police inquiries.

He has denied any wrongdoing and all allegations made against him, and no charges have been made at this time.

A police statement confirmed: “A man was arrested on suspicion of rape and false imprisonment”.

The statement added: “He has since been released under investigation pending further enquiries.”

The player was also issued with a fine along with a woman who was at the same address when police arrived to execute a warrant for breaching Covid-19 regulations.

The police statement added: “Two people, a woman and a man, who were present at the address at the time of the warrant were also issued with fixed penalty notices for Covid-19 breaches.”
