Your support makes all the difference.Southampton’s woes continued at Carrow Road, where manager Ronald Koeman angrily accused star players Sadio Mané and Victor Wanyama of letting down their team-mates and the club.
Mané was left on the bench after he turned up late to a team meeting before the match and Wanyama was sent off for a second bookable offence, shortly after which Norwich’s Alex Tettey scored the only goal.
“Sadio was meant to be in the side but we have rules at the club and he made a big mistake. Everyone knows there is a sanction [for being late] and you don’t start,” Koeman said. “I don’t understand how a player can be late for a meeting. I said to him two days ago that he was not focused on training and now this. He has let down not so much me as his team-mates, the club.
“You have responsibilities to the club, the fans, the board, the technical staff.”
Asked if he felt Mané’s head had been turned by transfer speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United, Koeman said: “I don’t know, maybe. You would have to ask him.”
Wanyama’s 73rd-minute dismissal came after he fouled Norwich substitute Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe, having been booked in the first half for a foul on Nathan Redmond.
Tettey fired home two minutes later from Odjidja-Ofoe’s assist, deepening Koeman’s displeasure. “A player with Victor’s experience knows he cannot make a tackle like that when he already has a yellow card,” he said.
Southampton shaded an open first-half, with Norwich goalkeeper Declan Rudd making important saves from Shane Long and Jordy Clasie. But Norwich had chances, too, and it was difficult to argue with manager Alex Neil’s assertion that they deserved the points.
