Jose Mourinho sacked as Manchester United manager

After Jose Mourinho was sacked this morning by Manchester United, Laurent Blanc has emerged as the favourite to take over as temporary manager until the end of the season.

It’s believed that the United hierarchy want to employ an interim manager who is already familiar with the club, with Blanc winning the Premier League title at Old Trafford in his final season as a professional.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also been touted as a potential candidate. The former United striker, who made 235 appearances for the club, is currently managing Molde FK in the Norwegian Eliteserien.

Mauricio Pochettino is believed to be the United’s preferred candidate, however, the Argentinian signed a five-year contract extension with Spurs earlier this year. At a press conference today previewing Spurs’ Carabao Cup fixture versus Arsenal on Wednesday evening, Pochettino claimed that “anything can happen in football” but insisted he was focused on Tottenham.

Other candidates such as Antonio Conte and Zinedine Zidane, who are both currently unattached to a club, have also been spoken of as contenders.
