It didn’t need any further subplots but the appointment of Rafael Benitez at Newcastle, the arch enemy of Black Cats boss Sam Allardyce, makes this even bigger than usual while Norwich’s victory at West Bromwich Albion yesterday afternoon ramps up the pressure yet further.

Southampton then host Liverpool as the hunt for European football heats up another notch before the main event, if you’re from Manchester at least, as United travel across the city to face City with Champions League qualification at stake.

Tottenham, who watched leaders Leicester City open an eight point gap at Crystal Palace, can narrow that figure down with three points against rejuvenated Bournemouth at White Hart Lane.
